What it means
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a condition in which a person feels excessive, hard-to-control worry about many different areas of life — such as health, work, finances, family, or everyday tasks — most days for at least six months. The worry is often disproportionate to actual circumstances and interferes with daily functioning. Physical symptoms can include muscle tension, headaches, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, irritability, and an unsettled stomach. GAD is one of the most common anxiety disorders in the US. Treatment is effective and typically includes therapy — especially cognitive behavioral therapy — relaxation techniques, and sometimes medication. Your primary care provider can help initiate treatment or refer you to a mental health specialist.
