What it means

Grief counseling is a form of therapy that supports people who are coping with loss — the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, a serious illness, or another significant life change. Grief is a natural human response to loss, but for some people it becomes prolonged or complicated and significantly impairs daily functioning. A grief counselor or therapist helps you process your feelings, develop healthy coping strategies, and find meaning after loss without rushing or minimizing your pain. Grief counseling may be covered by insurance when it is delivered by a licensed therapist or clinical social worker. Many hospice and hospital programs also offer free or low-cost grief support groups.
