What it means

Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions involving persistent disturbances in eating behavior that negatively affect physical health, emotional wellbeing, and daily functioning. Common types include anorexia nervosa (severely restricting food intake), bulimia nervosa (cycles of binge eating and purging), and binge eating disorder (recurring episodes of eating large amounts without purging). These conditions can affect people of any gender, age, or body size. Eating disorders have one of the highest mortality rates of any mental health condition, but they are treatable. Care is typically delivered by a team that may include a therapist, dietitian, physician, and psychiatrist. Early treatment leads to better recovery outcomes.
