Third-Party Payment

第三者行為による傷病届 (Daisan-sha kōi ni yoru shōbyō todoke)

A notification and payment arrangement used when a patient's injury or illness was caused by a third party, such as in a traffic accident. The patient must notify their insurer to allow public health insurance to cover treatment initially, with the insurer later seeking reimbursement from the at-fault party or their liability insurer. Failing to report a third-party cause can complicate or void coverage.

After a traffic accident in Japan, file the daisan-sha todoke with your health insurer promptly so that NHI can be used at the hospital rather than paying entirely out of pocket.
