Miscarriage

流産 (ryūzan)

A miscarriage is the spontaneous loss of a pregnancy before 20 weeks of gestation, most commonly occurring in the first trimester. In Japan, miscarriage is managed medically in gynecology departments using medication or a curettage procedure. Grief counseling specifically for pregnancy loss is limited but increasingly available through select hospitals and nonprofit organizations. Foreign residents should confirm in advance whether their health insurance covers miscarriage-related medical procedures and any follow-up appointments.

Pregnancy loss can be a sensitive and underreported topic in Japan, with limited public support networks, though some hospitals and NGOs now offer dedicated counseling services for families experiencing miscarriage.
