Maternity Leave Benefit

出産手当金 (Shussan teate-kin)

A cash allowance paid to employed women enrolled in employee health insurance who take approved maternity leave. It covers roughly 67% of the standard daily wage for up to 98 days around childbirth (42 days before, 56 days after). Self-employed or nationally insured individuals receive a separate lump-sum birth allowance instead. Eligibility requires active enrollment at the time of leave.

This benefit is distinct from the lump-sum birth allowance (shussan ikuji ichijikin) paid to all insured mothers regardless of employment status.
