介護保険 (kaigo hoken)
Long-Term Care Insurance (介護保険, kaigo hoken) is a mandatory social insurance system that funds professional care services for elderly and disabled people. Premium contributions begin at age 40. From age 65, certified individuals can access funded services including home-visit care, adult day care, and nursing home placement. Foreign residents aged 40 and over enrolled in health insurance also pay into and may access this system.
Foreign residents aged 40 or older pay long-term care insurance premiums alongside their health insurance and may access care services if they receive an official care-level certification.
