Joint Pain
関節痛 (kansetsutsū)
Joint pain (arthralgia) is discomfort, soreness, or aching in one or more joints where two bones meet. Common causes include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, and sports injuries. In Japan's aging population, knee osteoarthritis (変形性膝関節症, henkeisei hiza kansetsu-shō) is extremely common. Gout, influenced by diet, is also prevalent, particularly among middle-aged men.
Orthopedic and rheumatology (リウマチ科, ryūmachi-ka) departments treat joint pain; gout is managed in internal medicine clinics.
