Intramuscular Injection
筋肉注射 (kin'niku chūsha)
An intramuscular injection delivers medication directly into a muscle, typically the upper arm, thigh, or buttock. The drug is absorbed from the muscle tissue into the bloodstream more slowly than an intravenous injection but more quickly and completely than an oral tablet. Common uses include vaccines, certain antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and hormonal treatments that require controlled absorption over several hours.
Many vaccines in Japan, including the influenza and COVID-19 vaccines, are administered as intramuscular injections at hospitals, clinics, and designated vaccination venues.
