First Aid

応急処置 (ōkyū shochi)

First aid is immediate basic medical care given to an injured or ill person before professional help arrives. In Japan, local fire departments offer free first aid training courses to residents. Public spaces widely stock AEDs for cardiac emergencies. Knowing how to call 119, describe your location in Japanese, and perform CPR or the Heimlich maneuver can be life-saving in the critical minutes before paramedics reach the scene.

Japan's fire departments run regular public first-aid courses, and AED locations are registered in a nationwide searchable database available via smartphone apps.
