Unconsciousness

意識不明 (ishiki fumei)

Unconsciousness means a person is unresponsive and cannot be woken, which may signal cardiac arrest, stroke, severe head injury, or seizure. Call 119 immediately. While waiting for paramedics, check that the airway is clear and monitor breathing; begin CPR if there is no pulse. Never leave an unconscious person alone or give them food or liquid. Prompt bystander action in the first minutes is critical to a positive outcome.

Japan has one of the world's highest bystander CPR rates, reflecting decades of public training campaigns run by fire departments and community organizations.
