Cesarean Section
帝王切開 (teiō sekkai)
A cesarean section is a surgical procedure in which a baby is delivered through incisions made in the mother's abdomen and uterus. In Japan, the cesarean rate is approximately 25 to 30 percent and rising. Planned cesareans are scheduled in advance, while emergency cesareans may be required due to complications during labor. When medically indicated, the procedure is covered by national health insurance. Hospital stays after a cesarean in Japan are typically longer than in Western countries.
Cesarean sections performed for medical necessity are covered by national health insurance in Japan, but elective cesareans are not and may cost 500,000 yen or more out of pocket.
