Blood Transfusion
輸血 (yuketsu)
A blood transfusion is a medical procedure in which donated blood or blood components (red blood cells, plasma, platelets) are transferred into a patient's bloodstream intravenously. It is used to treat severe anemia, significant blood loss from surgery or trauma, and clotting disorders. Japan's blood supply is managed by the Japanese Red Cross Society and is considered very safe with strict screening protocols.
Patients who refuse blood transfusions for religious or personal reasons (e.g., Jehovah's Witnesses) should communicate this clearly in writing to Japanese medical staff before any procedure.
