Anesthesiology
麻酔科 (masui-ka)
Anesthesiology (麻酔科, masui-ka) is the specialty responsible for administering anesthesia (sedation and pain management) during surgical procedures, and monitoring patients' vital signs throughout operations. Anesthesiologists also manage acute and chronic pain, and provide intensive care. Pre-operative evaluations ensure anesthesia is safe for the individual patient.
Before surgery in Japan, patients undergo a pre-anesthetic assessment (術前診察, jutsuzen shinsatsu) and must disclose all medications, allergies, and prior anesthesia experiences.
