What it means
Valvular heart disease occurs when one or more of the four heart valves does not work properly. The valves control blood flow through and out of the heart. A valve may fail to open fully (stenosis), restricting blood flow, or fail to close completely (regurgitation), allowing blood to leak backward. Common affected valves are the aortic and mitral valves. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue, palpitations, chest pain, and leg swelling. Causes include aging, prior infections such as rheumatic fever, birth defects, and other heart conditions. Treatment may include medications to manage symptoms or surgery or catheter-based procedures to repair or replace the affected valve.
