What it means
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints. Uric acid is a waste product formed when the body breaks down purines, substances found in certain foods and drinks such as red meat, shellfish, and alcohol. When uric acid levels become too high, needle-like crystals form in joints, triggering sudden episodes of intense pain, swelling, redness, and warmth, most commonly in the big toe. Attacks can last days to weeks. Without treatment, repeated episodes can cause permanent joint damage. Treatment includes anti-inflammatory medications during attacks and long-term medications to lower uric acid levels.
