Topical Ointment
外用軟膏 (Gaiyō nankō)
A semi-solid medication applied directly to the skin surface to treat local conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, infections, inflammation, or pain. Japanese pharmacies carry a wide range of OTC topical ointments for rashes, wounds, and insect bites. Prescription ointments include corticosteroid creams, tacrolimus for atopic dermatitis, and antibacterial agents. Always apply to clean, dry skin and wash hands after use unless hands are the treatment area.
Topical steroid ointments are ranked by potency class in Japan (Class 1 being strongest); prescription class determines which a pharmacist may dispense versus requiring a physician.
