Suppository
座薬 (Zayaku)
A solid dosage form inserted into the rectum or vagina where it dissolves to release medication. Rectal suppositories are commonly used in Japan for fever reduction in children who cannot swallow tablets, as well as for treating constipation and hemorrhoids. They are absorbed through the rectal mucosa, bypassing the digestive system for faster action. Refrigerate suppositories unless instructed otherwise and insert after softening briefly in the hand.
Zayaku (suppositories) are a standard pediatric prescription format in Japan for antipyretics, and parents are routinely counseled on proper insertion technique at the pediatric clinic.
