Antipyretic

解熱剤 (Genestu-zai)

A medicine that reduces fever by acting on the hypothalamus to lower the body's temperature set point. The most common antipyretic available in Japan is acetaminophen (paracetamol), sold as Calonal or Tylenol. Aspirin is generally avoided for children due to the risk of Reye's syndrome. Mild formulations are available over the counter, while higher-dose preparations require a prescription.

Japanese physicians commonly prescribe suppository or liquid antipyretic forms for young children who cannot swallow tablets.
