Laxative

下剤 (Gezai)

A medication used to relieve constipation by stimulating bowel movements or softening stool. Types available in Japan include bulk-forming agents (psyllium), stool softeners, osmotic laxatives (magnesium oxide, lactulose), and stimulant laxatives (senna, bisacodyl). Magnesium oxide is the most commonly prescribed laxative in Japan. Many mild formulations are available without a prescription at pharmacies.

Magnesium oxide (Magsent) is a first-line prescription laxative in Japan and is especially common in elderly care settings due to its safety profile.
