Ophthalmology

眼科 (ganka)

Ophthalmology (眼科, ganka) is the specialty dedicated to the medical and surgical care of the eyes. It covers prescription of eyeglasses, contact lens fitting, and treatment of glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and eye infections. Japan has an extremely high prevalence of myopia, and optometry services integrated with ophthalmology are widely available.

Ophthalmology clinics in Japan typically do not require a referral and can be visited directly for eye complaints or vision concerns.
