Heatstroke
熱中症 (necchūshō)
Heatstroke is a life-threatening condition in which the body's temperature regulation fails, causing core body temperature to rise dangerously. Japan's hot and humid summers make it extremely common. Symptoms include very high body temperature, altered mental state, and absence of sweating. Move the person immediately to shade or air-conditioning, apply ice packs to the neck, armpits, and groin, and call 119. Air-conditioned train stations and convenience stores serve as emergency cooling refuges.
Japan's Ministry of the Environment issues real-time heat stroke risk alerts using the WBGT index, accessible via public apps and displayed on outdoor heat-warning signboards during summer.
