Dehydration
脱水 (dassui)
Dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than it takes in, disrupting normal bodily functions. Japan's hot and humid summers make dehydration a common cause of hospitalization, particularly among elderly people and children. Mild dehydration can be managed with oral rehydration solutions available at pharmacies. Severe dehydration requiring IV fluids must be treated at a hospital or clinic. Seek medical care if symptoms include extreme thirst, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, or confusion.
Japan's Ministry of the Environment issues daily heat stroke risk alerts during summer, and IV rehydration drip clinics (tenteki) have become common in urban centers.
