Child Medical Expense Subsidy

子ども医療費助成 (Kodomo iryōhi josei)

A municipal government program that reduces or eliminates the out-of-pocket medical costs for children up to a locally defined age limit, often up to junior high or high school. Coverage varies significantly by municipality; some areas cover all costs with no copayment, while others require a small fee per visit. Foreign resident children enrolled in national health insurance are generally eligible if registered at the ward office.

Parents should register for this subsidy at their local ward or municipal office shortly after the child's birth or after moving into the area.
