What it means
Weight gain refers to an increase in body weight over time. It may result from eating more calories than the body burns, but it can also be caused by medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing syndrome, or fluid retention from heart, kidney, or liver disease. Certain medications, including steroids, antidepressants, and antipsychotics, can also cause weight gain. Rapid or unexplained weight gain should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve dietary changes, exercise, medication adjustment, or management of an underlying condition.
