What it means
The vitamin D blood test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the form your liver makes after you absorb vitamin D from sunlight or food. This is the most reliable way to assess your vitamin D status. Low vitamin D is linked to weak bones (osteoporosis, rickets), muscle weakness, and immune problems. Very high levels from excessive supplementation can cause toxicity. Blood is drawn from a vein in your arm. No fasting is required. Results above 30 ng/mL are generally considered sufficient; below 20 ng/mL is deficient. Doctors order this test for patients at risk of bone disease, people with limited sun exposure, those who are obese, or individuals with gut absorption disorders.
