What it means
Vision changes refer to any new or unexpected alteration in what or how you see. These can include blurriness, dimming, blind spots, color distortion, sensitivity to light, or sudden loss of vision in one eye. Gradual changes are often caused by refractive errors, cataracts, glaucoma, or macular degeneration. Sudden vision changes — especially in one eye or paired with headache, eye pain, or flashing lights — can signal a detached retina, stroke, or acute glaucoma. Call 911 or go to an emergency room immediately if vision changes are sudden, severe, or affect one eye without warning. Early treatment can prevent permanent vision loss.
