What it means
Urgent prior authorization—also called expedited prior authorization—is an accelerated insurance review for requests where waiting for a standard review could seriously jeopardize the patient's health or safety. Under federal rules for urgent care situations, insurers must respond to expedited requests within 72 hours. For life-threatening emergencies, care must be provided first and prior authorization is not required in the emergency department. Your doctor must indicate on the request why the situation is urgent. If an urgent authorization is denied, you have the right to an expedited appeal, which must also receive a faster response.
