What it means
Hospital admission means you are formally checked in as an inpatient and will stay overnight or longer for medical care. A physician must write an order to admit you. Your care team, room assignment, and insurance billing all change after admission. There is an important distinction between inpatient admission and observation status, which affects your Medicare or insurance costs significantly. When admitted, you will be asked about your insurance, next of kin, and advance directives. You have the right to know your admission status.
