What it means
A glucose tolerance test measures how your body processes sugar and is used to diagnose diabetes or gestational diabetes. You will fast for eight to twelve hours before the test. A fasting blood sample is drawn, and then you drink a sweet glucose solution. Blood samples are collected one, two, or sometimes three hours later to see how your blood sugar levels change over time. You should remain seated and avoid eating, drinking, or smoking during the waiting period. The waiting time can be two to three hours total, so bring something quiet to do. During pregnancy, a one-hour screening test is usually done first, followed by the three-hour GTT if results are elevated. You may feel nausea from the sweet drink.
