What it means
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, usually due to elevated pressure inside the eye. It is a leading cause of blindness in the US. Glaucoma often has no symptoms in the early stages, making regular eye exams essential. As it progresses, patients may notice loss of peripheral (side) vision. Risk factors include high eye pressure, age over 60, family history, and certain medical conditions. Treatment cannot reverse damage already done but can slow progression. Options include eye drops, laser treatment, and surgery.
