What it means
Genetic testing analyzes your DNA to identify changes or mutations in genes, chromosomes, or proteins that may indicate a risk for certain inherited diseases or conditions. Samples are usually collected through a blood draw, cheek swab, or saliva sample. Results may take days to several weeks depending on the complexity of the analysis. Genetic tests are used for many purposes, including diagnosing hereditary conditions, assessing cancer risk such as BRCA gene mutations, determining medication responses, or evaluating prenatal health. A genetic counselor may meet with you before and after testing to explain what the results mean for you and your family. Results can have important implications for relatives, so counseling is strongly recommended.
