Newborn Screening

新生児スクリーニング (shinseiji sukurīningu)

Newborn screening is a public health program that tests infants shortly after birth for rare but treatable metabolic, hormonal, and genetic conditions. In Japan, the program screens for approximately 20 conditions including phenylketonuria and congenital hypothyroidism. The test is performed via a heel-prick blood sample taken three to five days after birth, before hospital discharge. Costs are partially subsidized by local governments, and results are recorded in the Maternal and Child Health Handbook.

Japan's neonatal screening panel has expanded in recent years, and the conditions tested may differ from those screened in your home country.
