Ear Drops
点耳薬 (Ten'ji-yaku)
Liquid medication applied directly into the ear canal to treat conditions such as otitis externa (swimmer's ear), earwax softening, or minor bacterial or fungal ear infections. In Japan, ear drops containing antibiotics or antifungals are dispensed by prescription. Some OTC products for earwax softening exist, but most medicated ear drops require a physician's evaluation first. Tilt the head to allow drops to reach the canal and remain for the prescribed time.
Ear drops for otitis media (middle ear infection) are less common in Japan since the eardrum must be perforated for them to reach the middle ear; oral antibiotics are the standard treatment.
