Burn
熱傷 (nesshō)
A burn is tissue damage caused by heat, chemicals, electricity, or radiation. Burns are classified by depth: superficial (first degree), partial thickness (second degree), or full thickness (third degree). For minor burns, apply cool running water for at least 10 minutes. For severe or large burns, call 119 immediately. Never apply ice or butter, which worsen tissue damage. Serious burns are treated at specialized burn units in major hospitals across Japan.
Severe burn cases in Japan are referred to designated burn centers, which are concentrated at university hospitals and national medical centers in major cities.
