Antacid

制酸剤 (Seisan-zai)

A medicine that neutralizes excess stomach acid to relieve heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux. OTC antacids in Japan often contain aluminum hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, or calcium carbonate, sold under brand names like Gascon or Mylanta. Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole are available by prescription for chronic conditions like GERD and peptic ulcers.

Japan has a high prevalence of H. pylori infection linked to peptic ulcers; physicians may prescribe an eradication regimen alongside antacid therapy after endoscopy confirmation.
