Amniocentesis

羊水検査 (yōsui kensa)

Amniocentesis is a prenatal diagnostic procedure in which a small sample of amniotic fluid is withdrawn via a needle inserted through the abdomen to test for chromosomal abnormalities or genetic conditions. In Japan, it is offered to higher-risk pregnant women, typically those over 35 or with abnormal screening results. The procedure is usually performed between 15 and 18 weeks of pregnancy. Genetic counseling (iden kaunseringu) is strongly recommended before undergoing amniocentesis in Japan.

Japan also offers non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) using maternal blood at designated facilities, providing a lower-risk alternative screening option before deciding whether to proceed with amniocentesis.
