US Medical Phrasebook
Dental Office
A visit to a US dental office involves a distinct set of administrative and clinical conversations that differ meaningfully from a general medical appointment. Most dental practices in the United States are private businesses, and while many accept dental insurance, dental coverage is structured very differently from medical insurance — it typically has an annual maximum benefit (commonly $1,000 to $2,000 per year), and once that maximum is reached, the patient is responsible for all remaining costs. This means it is especially important to ask about costs before agreeing to any treatment. At the start of most dental visits, the dental assistant or hygienist will take X-rays (radiographs) and perform a preliminary examination before the dentist sees you. X-rays allow the dentist to see between teeth, below the gumline, and inside the jawbone — areas not visible during a visual examination. Asking what the X-ray shows is a normal and appropriate question that dentists expect and welcome. Common procedures you may encounter include cleanings (prophylaxis), fillings for cavities, crowns (caps that cover a damaged tooth), root canals (treatment of the inner pulp of an infected tooth), and extractions (tooth removal). Each carries a different cost and recovery profile. Understanding the difference before consenting protects you from surprise bills. Patients with certain heart conditions — such as a history of endocarditis, specific congenital heart defects, or heart valve replacements — may require antibiotic premedication before dental work to prevent a serious infection called infective endocarditis. If you have a relevant cardiac history, always inform your dentist before any procedure. Sedation options, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation, are widely available for anxious patients at most dental offices.

Key terms
- crown
- A tooth-shaped cap placed over a damaged or decayed tooth to restore its shape, size, and function. Crowns are typically made of porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination, and require the underlying tooth to be reshaped before placement. The procedure is usually completed over two appointments.
- root canal
- A dental procedure to remove infected or inflamed pulp (the soft tissue inside a tooth containing nerves and blood vessels), clean and disinfect the inner canal, and seal it to prevent further infection. Contrary to reputation, modern root canals are typically no more painful than a filling, thanks to local anesthesia.
- periodontal disease
- A serious gum infection that damages the soft tissue and, if untreated, can destroy the bone supporting the teeth, leading to tooth loss. Also called gum disease, it ranges from mild gingivitis (gum inflammation) to severe periodontitis. It is treated by deep cleaning procedures called scaling and root planing.
