Eye Drops
点眼薬 (Ten'gan-yaku)
Liquid medication applied directly into the eye to treat conditions such as dry eye, allergic conjunctivitis, bacterial eye infections, or glaucoma. Japan has an extensive OTC eye drop market with popular brands like Rohto and Sante. Prescription eye drops are used for glaucoma (prostaglandin analogues, beta-blockers) and post-surgical care. Medicated eye drops should never be shared between users due to infection risk.
Japanese OTC eye drops often contain a menthol-like cooling sensation ingredient that is a cultural preference but has no therapeutic benefit for most conditions.
