988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline

988自殺・クライシスライフライン (988 jisatsu kuraishisu raifurain)

988 is a three-digit dialing code that connects callers in the United States to the national Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, operated by SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by call or text. Trained counselors provide confidential support for people experiencing suicidal thoughts, mental health crises, or substance use emergencies. The service is free and does not require health insurance. Veterans can press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line.

988 replaced the previous 10-digit crisis line number in July 2022 to make mental health crisis support easier to access.
